Working Together for High Quality: Every AQS participant, from harvest through production, has agreed to adopt and adhere to an improved set of industry-wide handling procedures and grade specifications. The result is a successful statewide quality program earning Alaska producers a reputation for consistent, high quality seafood. Participating fishermen help to preserve quality from the moment fish is caught by following detailed handling, chilling and delivery guidelines. This ensures that the greatest portion of each catch can achieve the highest quality grades. Tender operators and buying stations also follow specific handling procedures, which include separation and special handling of fish delivered by participating fishermen. The product is then quickly transported to the processing plant to preserve shelf life. Participating plants adopt the four grading standards and continue to assure quality by handling Program fish with extra care to minimize damage during processing. All seafood that qualifies during a final inspection is labeled with an AQS seal to indicate certification and the grade. Specific handling requirements for each industry segment can be found inside.
