The Alaska Quality Seafood Program is ensuring that the best seafood in the world is also the most consistent and high quality. Working with fishermen and processors, the Program has improved handling procedures and established uniform standards, and certifies the effort with independent third-party quality inspections. As a result, seafood buyers throughout the distribution chain will receive consistent salmon quality each and every time they order.
Developed and administered by Alaska Quality Seafood (AQS), this voluntary program has attracted the state's most quality-conscious fishermen and processors as its participants. The Program is comprehensive, involving all stages of harvesting and processing:
Participating fishermen help to preserve the quality of the salmon from the moment it is caught. They follow detailed handling, chilling and delivery guidelines to ensure that the greatest portion of their catch can achieve the highest quality. |
Tender operators and buying stations also follow specific handling procedures, which include separation and special handling of fish from participating fishermen, and quick deliveries to the processing plant to preserve shelf life. |
Processing plants have adopted new standards that are consistent statewide. All fish is inspected throughout the process. |
A final inspection of over 30 quality criteria verifies the quality . This inspection is audited to ensure compliance. |
An official seal is applied to the box once the inspection is completed. | The Alaska Quality Seafood Program has been shown to increase the confidence of seafood buyers in Alaska salmon, decrease labor and other costs associated with misgraded fish, increase product shelf life and decrease waste. Together, these benefits mean increased profits from your operation.
